View Full Version : Eye vs Benwick

well it pains me to say it but i had to experience the game from the side line while quietly confident we would have 3 points after the final whistle, my mind was more so wondering what the war boys stilton score would be.

Taking into consideration Benwick turned up with bare 11 and a child running the line they resembled a side stuggling in division 2 but as your about to find out this look was very deceiving!

the game was your standard top vs bottom clash but with one different after 10 minutes you could be forgiven for having no idea which team was near the top and vice versa!

Eventually the first goal came but it wasnt from any sort of good football, cast your minds back to Wimbledon and 99% of you have already said it... long ball mistake by the defender and Luke punished the mistake.

Benwick you may have thought would have rolled over like most teams have done this season but they didnt and they battled hard. Eye did have numerous chances to increase their lead but their keeper made a number of excellent saves and the simple stuff looked easy to him too which you dont always get at our level.:soo:

Due to their hard work Benwick were soon rewarded and really well deserved, a corner came in weak header out and a top draw finish by the young man that struck it leaving Billy without a chance.

half time 1-1 and i wont say it should have been any other score because that was a fair half time score.

We all got a stern b0ll0ckin and this we hoped would shake us up and we could get back to playing football, it wasnt to be and we started the same way we left off, again having plenty of chances eye couldnt beat the inspired keeper, Benwick worked extra hard knowing they could make themselves proud with a result they pt the extra effort in. A spot of luck fell their way when a ball into the box which looked like it would be easily dealt with by Billy was glanced into the back of the net by the birthday boy Lewis happy 18th mate. At least you have scored in adult football now.

At the time i couldnt get my head around what i was seeing rather than work together there was numerous mad moments fro the eye boys and Benwick could have bagged another but for a good save fro Billy.

(now i may have the next 2 goals the wrong way round so please correct me if i am wrong)

Eye managed to get themselves a free kick on the edge of the box and placed by Foggy he hit the most Bizzare free kick i have actually ever seen, i was watching from the touchline along with 8 others and we all saw the same but Foggy will disagree, he hit his free kick which lifted up and over the wall but it seemed to hit a forcefield as it headed over the bar however it didnt go over it dropped over the line and the keeper was as amazed as the rest of us watching!

With the game all square again and both teams not wanting to make any more mistakes disaster struck for the Eye lads when a quick attack from Benwick saw the ball make its way into our area and a coming together/shot and the next thing i notice our birthday boy Lewis take the ball in his stride for 8 yards out and run it straight over the line for his second of the gae and Benwick taking the lead again! Amazing stuff.

They defended as best they cold because it was waive after waive of attack from the eye lads but the counter attacks were just as good and Benwick saw a good chance go begging when a loose ball in the area struck straight at Billy prevented them going 4-2 up!

As you all know from chats on here over the weekend there were some heavy challenges and on a few occasions the Benwick lads had 10 players on the field due to injuries and they seemed to have one lad struggling with a freak illness but he carried on.

with 10 minutes to go a cross came in from glen who came on as a sub and Foggy hit his second with a header over the keeper and a bit of heartache for the lads who were worn out.

5 minutes later saw a terrible challenge by Ian and a straight red from the referee. Im not going to get involved in the polotics of it all i know how i feel when things dont work out and with the chances we were spawning i could see the rage build up in the lads unfortunately it came out in the wrong manner!

Still Eye really did have chance to nick the game right at the death while down to ten spenny 5 yards out the ball dropped to him only the keeper to beat but caught in 2 minds shoot - glory square it open goal he shot too late and the keeper narrowed his angle and the ball bobbled wide!

it felt like heart break to drop points at such a crucial time but it was nothing but delight for a bare 11 benwick.

Who may i add had the best lino in the league, he got 1 decision wrong in my opinion and that was a tight off side decision and just look how picky that is (it would have had no impact on the game either) he was only a young lad so i thought deserved a assive congratulations.

Well done to Benwick.
I dont really care if all the other teams out there look at this and think we dont deserve to be where we are. I think we do and i look at the result as a kick in the butt i guess its the only way we can if were not to get down hearted about the result.

No game this week so free rest time and hopefully i will be back the following week!

Nice report Harbs and thanks for the great comments about our lino, not a bad lad, the one thing that last year taught Benwick was not to lay down for anyone.I told my boys that you were the best footballing team i have seen this year and still believe that. if you give every team respect you would have been very hard pushed to be beat this year, thanks for the report.

i will with out a doubt be watching a game on Staurday and you can bank on it that most e team wil be.
its not just about playing the game with the lads you form a good team by getting to know them and thats what you do on your free weekends so we will probably all get together and watch either war boys or stilton and cheer the other team on? thats what its all about right other wise whats the point???
dont worry Ross im a big boy i dont ind his stick, just as long as he can take it when the time is right.
we deserve all the p1ss taking we get this week too, i just wish i could smile an shrug my shoulders at it.
Answer question Fen there's not much you can do other than watch when you have a bruised toe nail but i'll be back soon enough... i will defo be back for you boys.

Harbs i no and play footy with bewick keeper on Sundays. you are right he does do the basics very well and is an excellent shot stopper. Would not be surprised to see him go to a bigger club in the summer.

Good report Harbs...if my memory serves me correctly (which it probably doesn't...but anyway) we played benwick last season towards the end of the season in similar circumstances, after demolishing um in our first match about 15-0 we thought the second would be easy, but found ourselves 1-0 down for a lot of the game, we did turn it around in the end, but i remember the keeper making some great saves (think it was the same one?). They never gave up and all credit to them for sticking together and pulling some better results out this season.

Bratts, we were 2 down last year!!!!!

29-01-2008, 10:32
Simply me & Slim Bratts - i remeber that game well, it was completeley the reverse of when we 1st played them, the 1st game we spanked them 13-1 and yet even though they were getting spanked not once did any of there players start kicking out or playing dirty, they just played the game with a smile on there face ( example to us all i thinks ). Then when they visited us, they had already started to reduce the scoreline in what they were getting beat by...and all credit to them they went 2 up against us and had us rattled, luckily enough though we won 3-2 and we were very lucky to beat them..I for 1 am glad they stuck it out last season and have continued on...

makes a change to talk about another team in the league other than Stilton Eye Warboys etc.
so maybe we can see some lads from Benwick etc posting some match reportes and any other teams that have people on the site, we welcome your opinions guys.

I echo Bratts comments!!

We played Benwick at their place early in the season (last year) and won at a canter but despite losing every game they had their own ambitions to reduce the deficits etc and they earnt a s**t load of respect from everyone at Coates for how they went about their season.

This showed when they came to our place and with us needing a win for a title etc they did themselves and the league justice by competing for every ball and i believe we went behind in that came (not sure!) but it was close for long parts and i think our fitness showed as we scored a few late goals to earn the win.

Keep up the good work!

I agree with all your comments about Benwick they were the whipping boys last season, but this time around they have turned around and made a number of teams realise that they will have a game when they play them home or away. Good luck to them and I hope they can continue and establish themselves and become a better team the further they progress through the divisions.

If managers kicked players out of squads for bad tackles Warboys would only have 6 players left.

Back of the Net
31-01-2008, 16:35
you and Ginge do carry us mate, thats for sure....
yeah I played in the harder games and enjoyed em but to be honest after last Sat I just lost interest and that's not to mention the fact I've got 2 young kids at home now, so if I'm gonna give up a Saturday (aswell as Sundays with EMAP) then I gotta be getting games against the likes of Chatteris F Tigers after putting the effort in away at Warboys and Eye etc... might be a bit selfish but I aint got that many seasons left in me and time is prescious with family life so I made the call...

I got 20 mins for EMAP against JNE and although I was off the pace a bit I think I'll get back to fitness soon and will concentrate on that - I've told John that I would help out if he's short of players.

richie
31-01-2008, 16:44
i know what your saying mate and i would of been gutted if i didnt play against them on saturday.if you told john you would help out when needed then you will probably be there most weeks anyway.ha. do you think you will get 20 minutes against scarletts when we play you? that could be interesting, especially if you play right side of midfield

Back of the Net
31-01-2008, 16:58
when we go a few up against Scarletts it should allow me 20 mins to come on and skin you mate hahaha.... seriously though it would depend on who we have available!

Sat was a bit of a joke really, we started a forward who's due to be out for weeks (Shaun with a knee op) as from next week whilst leaving leaving 2 regular, Keen strikers on the bench and why Gregors is NOT playing at left back I just do not understand!!! then came making the subs, I've seen clubs un-organised but from the sideline watching it really was bad and we were moving people all over the place whilst leaving some regulars really ****ed off - that nailed it for me really as I cant really be giving my time to sit and watch at my age...
best of luck mate, and remember what I said Saturday about next season...

richie
31-01-2008, 17:08
i will mate and i said to mick at the start of the season(before i knew you)that if starkey was to fold i would be interested(if wanted obviously).a few decisions that happen on saturdays baffle me i must admit but i have been lucky enough to of been playing so havent seen it from the sideline,i trust your judgement though and understand your decision. oh and i dont think you will play against scarletts as you wont be a few up.revenge is sweet.ha
