WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 5
SAWSTON ROVERS 0

This week's match report is dedicated to Fen Tiger - thanks:

Whittlesey stormed into the Quarter Final's of the Cambs Junior Challenge Cup with an impressive 5-0 win over Cambridge side, Sawston Rovers at the Manor on Saturday.

The boys were in rampant mood Saturday and turned in a footballing display of real quality, the lads started brighly and Heron went close with a tremendous rasping drive that looked to be heading in. It wasn't long though before Whittlesey opened the deadlock, the visiting defence failed to clear a ball from a corner and Luke Quince stabbed home from close range to put us 1-0 up.

At 1-0 the visitors had their first real attempt on goal when their left winger raced through on goal only to be denied by an excellent one handed save from Fletcher in the Whittlesey goal.

Following this scare, the home side upped the tempo once more and were rewarded when they slotted home a second. Micky Burch worked a tremendous opening as he sold a dummy to his marker and he fizzed in a fast moving ball across the box that Quince couldn't poke home but the incoming Bobby Dart could as he smashed into the roof of the visiting net.

The visitors were clearly shellshocked and couldn't cope with the passing and movement of a rampant home side. The home side added a third on the half hour when Matty Heron leapt well at the back post to head home a corner. Moments later Whittlesey's dominance was rewarded further when they added a fourth, this time Burch heading home well from a wide centre to make it 4-0.

The midfield trio of Moore, Baxter and Heron were winning every loose ball and the Sawston midfield were simply being outclassed and over-run. Smith used his bursting pace to get away from his marker in the 40th minute and as the defender scrambled back to make the tackle he felled Smith in the box and the referee rightly awarded a penalty. Matty Heron stepped up and added his second and our fifth of the day with a rather fortuitous penalty that squeezed under the visiting keeper.

The half time team talk was fairly straight forward for the management team, for the boys to continue to play the way they had in the first but to maintain their concentration levels and not to to think that the game was won.

At half time the visitors made 3 changes and bolstered up their midfield which stemmed the flow of home attacks, despite this Whittlesey remained comfortable throughout the second half defending excellently, and pushing forward, Heron, Quince and Burch all went close in the second half but we failed to add any further goals to the afternoon's encounter.

In summary a terrific win for the boys and a first half performance that was simply sensational and probably the best since i have been managing the side. I told the boys before the game that we needed a reaction from the previous weeks poor performance at Parson Drove, and we certainly got that.

We now have our attentions firmly fixed on an important league encounter at Fletton at Woodlands this coming Saturday, here's hoping for another three points in what i'm sure will be a tough game!

Morning Barrel,

Many thanks for your comments. I am now out of hospital and slowly recovering at home (not the best Xams and new year i've ever had, but at least its kept me off the beer for a couple of weeks!)
Many congratulations to you and your team for an excellent first half of the season, although i am not so suprised you are at the top of the league as i predicted you would be the team to beat this year. Hope you continue to do well in all competitions.
Look forward to our meeting at the manor at the end of February, please go steady with us!
Thanks again and look forward to a beer together at the end of the match

Come on the villa!!

Nothing at all Harbs but if u read the last thread many at whittlesey regafd him as simply the best so with all due respect if he leaves a club of his mates I'm sure will be 4 peterborough prem side or higher

Have to agree with No9 fletch has had the chance to play for quite a few prem sides over the last couple of years but always comes back to were his heart is and the cheap ale!!!lol.
Oh and as for Div 2 harbs lets be honest the only reason it is so good this season is there are so many pot hunters in it this season trying something diff but lets see how many are still there next season if there team does not go up. *bkk*

I see Fen tiger hasn't corrected you regarding Warboys being a division 2 side next year!!! Maybe he has finally realised that they have improved but not enough this year to get promoted!! Am sure they will give it a dam good go but i can see them running just short!! Eye and Stilton for me this season!!

Surely Wsey ressies had the only TRUE unbeaten record anyway. I'm sure I remember us sticking 4 past Warboys without reply. :whs:
I can see them picking up a couple of trophies this season, couldn't possibly comment on which ones.

Already talking about signings for next season ? They'll be saying that they have a 5 year plan next, just like Real March had.

Dave think Ramsey are still unbeaten in the league also, just the e.t getting it wrong again I think

Mr Harley that's brave comment to make about pot hunters. Only 2 sids can go up be intresting to c where these players go.Why is div 2 so strong this year? how come so many quality players don't wanna play p'boro prem?

CoatesFC - Dave

Div 2 has always been a tough league to get out of...there are normally 3 or 4 teams that are just a bit better than the rest and also a further 2 or 3 that could take points from the top teams with a bit of lady luck.

This year has seen a few players drop down for whatever reason and as a result there are 5 or 6 good teams in this division that are capable of beating anyone!!

I can't believe i heard the words 'ET' and 'getting it wrong' in the same sentence!!! I think twice last season that had Guyhirn winning the league despite it being possible for us to win it!! Not satisfied with that, they had the cheek to comment about how Div 2 champions Guyhirn were doing in div 1 this season!!! SHOCKING!! :nono:

You are right Micky mate, Ramsey still unbeaten in the league, but i believe that they lost to St Ives Town in a cup match, therefore you boys are the only proper unbeaten team left....so congrats on that!!

I'm with Munnsy and think you will be amongst the silverware this season, but as it is still possible for two semi's against you we are naturally hoping it won't be in the Cambs cup!!!

10-01-2008, 08:41
Dave- weve got our feet firmly on the ground as the weeks and wins have been going on the pressure is increasing and every1 wants to be the first team to beat us. As regards to the 2 cambs cup games who knows we both have got difficult quarter finals no body is gonna roll over and die in these games regardless of there league postion or the league they play in. Could well be the derby of the season though!

CoatesFC - Dave
10-01-2008, 08:55
Haha it sure could!!!

You do all sound like you have got feet on the ground etc and are taking one game at a time!! All the best to you in your two quarters and lets hope for a couple of derby matches in the semis, with a few jars after!!

We shall no soon enough dave but the only problem dave we still have 16 league games left and only playing 1 more league game before end of feb and possibly 2 more before end of march if we get through in all cups could leave us with a lot of fixtures to play. Maybe success in all comps will prove to much in the end and most of all think we would all consider league most important!

Our game was called off today after yesterdays down pour, out of intrest had a ride of over to see the state of the pitches at castor and to my shock saw 2 pitches of which were in very good condition let alone playable. So another weekend lost for no reason, another midweek game think its crazy we should go back to the refs decision or clubs can cancel just because don't fancy it or players away suspended. Not saying this is the case here just stating an opinion because the pitch WAS playable,

Well no9 you might be annoyed that your game was off but this has always been the case in Peterborough as soon as there is a wee bit oh rain most games get called off. But at least Perkins lost so now you are now in a really strong position.
Oh and i am sure you wernt complaining when you were up the pub for straw bear fest!!!
