PARSON DROVE RESERVES 0
WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 2
Whittlesey travelled to Parson Drove on Saturday and picked up another three points as they continued their league campaign.
The visitors were looking to go into 2008 as the only unbeaten team in the league and knew that the afternoon's encounter would be a difficult one.
Whittlesey started slower than usual and failed to kick off any real momentum within their game, Bobby Dart had an excellent opportunity to give us the lead but dragged his shot wide when he found himself closing in on goal. The visitors were being held at bay by a Whittlesey back line who looked dominant all afternoon. It was only in the last 15 minutes of the first half that the visitors upped the tempo and they were rewarded when the home side failed to clear a ball in the box following a corner and Hibbins volleyed a left footer into the bottom corner of the net.
We were not winning enough second balls and this was one of the key points that was emphasised at half time, that we needed to pick up second half. Matty Heron was terrific as he pushed the visitors on at times in the second half where they were put under pressure from a resilient home side. Micky Burch almost added a second but headed over the bar under deep pressure from the home defence.
With the score at 1-0, the Parson Drove number 11 struck a pile driver that hit the outside of the Whittlesey post and cannoned out wide, this scare seemed to spark the visitors into action and Luke Quince added a vital second goal with a well executed volley that went in off the Parson Drove upright. With the game coming to a close, Fletcher in the Whittlesey goal pulled off an outstanding save when he denied a certain goal with an instinctive stop.
The boys picked up maximum points again but were far from convincing as we failed to inject any real impetus into the game and rode our luck at times - the week of excessive drinking looked to have taken its toll on the lads! It's been a good 2007 for the side but we are well aware of the need to carry it into the new year and throughout the remainder of this season, with the side in a good league position and still in three cup competitions. It's going to be an enduring next few months but if the boys show the same character that they have during the course of the season so far, then it will be an enjoyable one.
Next week we entertain Sawston Rovers in the Cambs Cup which is a huge game for both sides.
Happy New Year to all!
