LANGTOFT UNITED RESERVES 0
WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 3
Whittlesey maitained their impressive start to this season's campaign with a well deserved 3-0 win at Langtoft on Saturday afternoon.
Going into this game we knew our opponents would be keen to avenge the 5-1 defeat in the PFA Junior Cup back in November and we were aware that we would be in for a tough encounter and need to display the same attitude we have been doing over the course of the season.
The pitch was small in comparison to many others we have been used to but we adapted to the surroundings well, we should have taken the lead inside the opening minutes but Bobby Dart was ajudged to be offside and the goal disallowed. We took the game to the hosts and were rewarded when after 15 minutes, Paul Hibbins remained strong in the box against his marker and rounded the keeper to slot home from a tight angle and make the score 1-0.
Whittlesey had opportunites to extend their lead with Micky Burch and Paul Hibbins both coming close to extend the visitors lead and Hibbins having another goal disallowed for offside after a storming run from Matty Heron that deserved a goal. The home side had a couple of chances themselves with Fletcher in the Whittlesey goal forced to make a couple of stops in the first half to keep Langtoft at bay.
The second half commenced with us failing to click into gear and we started to lose the momentum of the game and were in danger of letting the home side back into the game. Despite this we were always confident that if we could add a second we would kill off any nervousness that may have started to creep into our game. With 20 minutes remaining Whittlesey were awarded a free kick and Danny Baxter delivered a ball of real class that only needed a touch from Heron to make it 2-0 and make life a little easier as we approached the last phase of the game.
Whittlesey were now pushing for more goals as the hope of an equaliser had now been extinguished from the home players minds, Micky Burch made it 3-0, ten minutes from time to snap up the three points with a poachers goal that despite the Langtoft players attempts trickled over the line.
In summary another good team performance again, and although we took our foot off the gas at the start of the second half, we continued to remain resolute and defended extremely well on Saturday and took the points. Another good win and three points away from home and a very happy dressing room after the game.
The spirit within the camp is superb at the moment and all the boys had a few beers last night at our annual xmas bash and were in good spirits, all of whom including myself were nursing very sore heads this morning.
We now focus our attentions on the visit of Chatteris to the Manor on Saturday -
