Whittlesey picked up an extremely valuable and deserved 3 points at the weekend at table toppers Moulton. The visitors who went into the game 4 points adrift of the opposition but with 5 games in hand knew that the afternoon's match was of huge importance.

The spirit in the camp is tremendous at the minute and the boys were in a focused mood as they met in Whittlesey ahead of the day's game. We reverted back to our usual formation with Adam Moore back fit after a week away with illness, which was a big plus point.

The lads started the game like a steam train and could have gone ahead in the opening seconds when midfielder Matty Heron chased down a backpass and was nearly rewarded when the goalkeeper's clearance rebounded off an oncoming Heron and whistled by the angle. The home side continued to open up the Moulton back line in difficult conditions, Burch played in Baker down the left on two occasions with a couple of sublime balls, but we failed to break down a resilient Moulton. After 20 minutes we got our just rewards when Micky Burch chased down a home defender who struggled to deal with the long ball and due to persistent pressure poked past his goalkeeper to make it 1-0.

The remainder of the first half saw the home side come more into the game as they started to win some of the loose balls in the middle of the park, their right winger was a nuisance with his pace and they looked to exploit that at every given opportunity. Despite the home side coming more into the game they didn't really threaten the visiting goal and it was Whittlesey who looked like scoring with Hibbins coming close on a couple of occasions and the visitors having two efforts cleared off the line from set pieces. The half time whistle went with the scores at 1-0. The lads were told to continue battling hard but they needed to start winning more of the loose balls. In the second hald we were tremendous and controlled the opening exchanges, this was rewarded when Mick Burch delivered a pin-point cross for Hibbins to head home to make it 2-0.

Moulton got back into the game and reduced the deficit when they broke quickly and caught us on the break and their right winger who was their best player throughout the day slotted home into an empty net.

Whittlesey responded well though and Burch again with some good work out wide laid Smith in to cross a ball into the box that was headed home again by Hibbins into the bottom corner of the net. The home side were deflated at the visitors third and we could have added a 4th with Hibbins coming close again.

In summary a terrific win at a place where it's as much about battling and competing as playing free-flowing football. The whole side was tremendous but Micky Burch and Matty Heron were in sensational form on Saturday and were simply too good for their opponents. We have another tough game on Saturday at Leverington, here's to another 3 points!

Fair assessment Ben - I think the platform for the win centred on two areas - one, in midfield - which Matty pretty much controlled from start to finish - with support from Ad's who was his usual all action style, although Danny had a quieter game than usual for him.

The second, up front - the obvious being given the chance Hibbo will score, but Saturday the star, for me was Micky.

Perhaps sometimes unfairly, he gets a tough time from me, being his old man and all that, but on Saturday he put a complete shift in - his passing and vision were excellent, his partnership with Hibbo gets better week on week, and because Moulton is never an easy place to dominate physically, most pleasing was that he bossed them there as well -
inevitably when he is ticking the whole team move up a level, so lets hope he keeps repeating the performance.

See you at training Thursday mate -have a good week.....
