WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 5
HAMPTON ATHLETIC RESERVES 0
Honda Combination Division 1 action was back on the Saturday afternoon agenda for Whittlesey after 3 consecutive Cup games and they returned with a bang beating Hampton 5-0 at the Manor.
Hampton who came into the game off the back of a fine 6-3 win away at Chatteris Town were in bouyant mood before the game and the lads knew that this would be a tough test.
The opening exchanges of the game on a cold November afternoon, were pleasant on the eye as both sides looked to play a high tempo passing game. Fletcher in the Whittlesey goal made a world class save to deny the visitors opening the scoring. As the first half wore on the home side began to play some fine free-flowing stuff and their persistence paid off after half an hour, when wing back Lee Baker flighted in a lovely in-swinging ball for Matty Heron to rise high in the box and head a looping header over the visiting keeper to make it 1-0.
The score was 1-0 at half time and the boys were told to ensure that they started the second half as they had finished the first. Hampton had a chance to equalise early in the second half, when their powerful centre forard muscled in on goal and lifted a shot over the lunge of Fletcher but wide of the post. Moments later the home side's advantage was doubled when Hibbins chested a ball from out wide with great technique and volleyed the subsequent dropping ball into the roof of the net for a wonder goal.
The home side really started to up the tempo with the midfield trio of Heron, Baxter and Moore in sensational form. Hibbins added his second of the game and 23rd of the season when he headed home to make it 3-0.
Goals followed with skipper Paul Minett firing a 30 yard thunderbolt into the back of the visiting net and Micky Burch adding a fifth with a well taken goal just seconds before the final whistle.
In summary, a teriffic win for the home side in what was an absolutely teriffic performance against a decent Hampton side. We are back in cup action on Saturday away at Stamford Bels in the Quarter Finals of the PFA Junior Cup, being without our tremendous goalkeeper Daniel Flecther will be a big blow but i'm sure the boys will go over their and stand up to be counted to try and overcome our Stamford Bels 'hoodoo'
Here's to another win, right i'm now off to Wembley
