WHITTLESEY dropped points for the first time this season, with a disappointing 1-1 draw at lowly Stamford on Saturday.

Despite dominating the game for long periods, the visitors could not break down a resolute home side who grabbed a share of the spoils.

We were slow out of the blocks Saturday, and Stamford could have taken the lead when their forward went through one on one only for Fletcher in the Whittlesey goal to make a good stop. Whittlesey had numerous chances to take the lead throughout the first half but failed to take them and a blatant penalty was turned away by the referee.

At half time despite the stalemate we were confident that we could break the home side down, and an early goal in the second half would be the catalyst for us being more ruthless in front of goal, however this never materialised and we were slow out of the blocks again. Stamford broke forward with 20 minutes left for the first time in the second half, delivered a ball into the box from wide right and their forward neatly slotted home to make it 1-0.

At this stage me, Bluestar and Cozza were shaking our heads in disbelief at the thought of this being our first defeat of the campaign, however the boys came back and a fantastic run by Matty Heron was thwarted when he was taken down in the box and the referee rightly awarded a penalty. Hibbo stepped up and cooly slotted home. We were now confident of a win but despite our pressure for the remainder of the game, we failed to find a winner.

In summary a big disappointment, in a game that felt like a defeat. It was the kick up the backside we may have needed as we didnt play at all well despite our dominance. Fair play to the Stamford lads on their point, they never stopped working. Bels seem to be our 'bogey' team and we always seem to struggle against them.

Need to get back to winning ways on Saturday in the Cambs Cup at The Vine near Ely. COME ON!

Pretty good assessment Ben - I think this game will be the defining moment for the season mate, as we have been saying every week we can't just turn up and expect to win, whoever we are playing - Speaking to the lads back at the clubhouse on Saturday, they knew that they could and should have won and they also know that the attitude we had shown against Holbeach etc wasnt there. Personally I think that the previous evening's excursion to see Neil Ruddock et al played a part in taking the sharpness, that we look for away, but I am confident that once we have the training session on Thursday and a little talk before our match Saturday we won't be too far away from getting that spirit and attitude back - I've a feeling that The Vine on Saturday will feel the backlash :gun: , see ya Thursday.
