Anyone know why it was abandoned ?

One of the Thorney lads suffered a bad leg break.

Our midfielder Dave Lynch suffered a double fracture of leg and ankle. Despite the protests of the idiots on the sidelines it's the first rule that you don't move somebody with a break. By the time the ambulance had arrived and actually left the pitch it was 45 minutes or so and our players were not too keen to carry on. Also the fact that we had used all subs meant we were down to 10 men.
That fact allied with the fact that it was not an accident or a 50/50 challenge means you'd think they'd have some sympathy but they were only interested in carrying on against 10 men.
The player involved was remorseful and the feeling amongst our players was that there was it was done and he'd apologised so no problem with their players. It was a foul, and a bad one - we all have different opinions -our players felt it should have been straight red, the ref showed yellow, the Long Sutton manager told the ET reporter that it was a fair tackle -
it was a bad tackle and a deliberate one - but our opinion is that the player was deliberately trying to foul Dave but was not meaning to do what he did. Hence the players were quick to say there was no malice before next week's rematch.
As for the behaviour of the Long Sutton spectators and the opinions of their manager it never ceases to amaze me how low people can stoop. I thought that football was a sport and a game that we were all meant to enjoy. Dave, like most of us, needs to go to work each week. He'll start this week with an operation on his ankle and probably won't be out until wednesday. Their manager could see nothing but the prospect of victory - we'd gladly give it them if it means they can find their way back out of the Peterborough League and back somewhere else.

The Long Sutton secretary rang this morning to ask after Dave's health and we appreciate that - the players we have no problems with - there's just a few idiots that make you wonder why we do it all.

For the record we were 2 up before Sutton pulled it back to 2-2.

Looking forward to the rematch next week and hopefully a fair and good contest. We will be donating all the match fees from both our teams plus anything else we can raise on Saturday to give Dave something back for the holiday he should have been going on tomorrow morning.

Sorry to hear that. When you see a match abandoned it is rarely for anything trivial.

Always sad to hear about a serious injury. Hope the player makes a full recovery. I quite understand Thorney not wanting to finish the game.

Best wishes to the lad involved.

We had a player when i was at Farcet who had a very similar injury, pass on the news to the fella, that he recovered well enough to start playing again and is still a good player.

Fingers crossed for him.

Best Wishes Dave, make a speedy recovery buddy. Hope to hear your playing again someday.

Hope dave gets well soon as I know how he feels after breaking my leg and having 3 ops but I am playing again and leg feels great. My advice- take your time, listen to the docs and plenty of swimming - took me 2 years to get back properly.

Shame on the long sutton manager for his comments in the paper last nite - Of course the game should be abandoned after something so serious has happened. We all have to make a living and dave may not be as lucky as I was with insurance (club should have some) and sick pay from work. As for saying that they would have won and that that they want a replay

What he should be saying is we have had a collection at our club and here is a donation to Dave from us.

As for the tackle, i have heard it is a bad one but only the player truly knows if he meant to hurt him but I am sure he did not.

Poor from mr preston and people like him are not really welcome in amatuer football in my view

Enough of my rant , good luck dave and speedy recovery mate!!

The year Dave has had so far he needs something to smile about.

We shall certainly be giving to the pot this weekend.

All the best Dave.

Thanks to everyone's good wishes and we'll make sure that Dave sees the forum for those.
He has had his operation and the neccesary plates and pins inserted to the two breaks and hopefully he'll be out of hospital today.

You never can tell with these injuries and it will be down to Dave and the powers of healing whether he plays again but obviously we hope so.

I did wonder whether my initial post was a bit of a rant but the write up in the ET sums it up really - if three points are really that important then I'll take a healthy team and bottom of the league everytime thanks.

Incidentally I believe we are now playing Netherton this week instead of Long Sutton.

Thorneyboy, you can also get some money from the FA you are affilated to as they have a pot for people who suffer serious injuries. I also benefitted from this when I was injured - only a small amount - £100 I remember but it all helps.

Forgot to put that good to see the Long Sutton chairman put himself out to make a call about Dave. Nice touch. :nwy:

Glad to hear you playing netherton, bit to soon to be playing Long Sutton again. Bottom of the league and healthy team sounds good to me!!

Got to say that this does open that old debate as to whether all clubs should be forced to have insurance!! Hope Thorney did!!

I would also like to wish Dave all the best.

Looks like we have Long Sutton now as the league have done the sensible thing and moved the fixtures to avoid the immediate rematch!

Some good advice from JNE!!

I know the Long Sutton Manager from playing there a few years ago. I'm not condoning the things he said, but they do seem awfully out of character for him. He was always one of the nicest guys at the club. He even came across well last year when they were getting thumped. i guess he's under pressure to get them up again but it really is no excuse to be so crass after the event, and even more so in speaking to the press

Thorneyboy, hope your man gets well soon.

the fa you're affiliated to should make it compulsory to pay a signing on fee which acts as a contribution towards insurance which th fa should cover all registered players with. isn't nationwide still big F.A. sponsors? surely they could get a great deal from them.

JNE, WHAT DO YOU THINK OUR SECRETARY DID, SHE PHONED THE FOLLOWING DAY!!, SO PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT.
WE HAD TWO OF OUR PLAYERS LEGS BROKE LAST SEASON AND YET WE HEARD NOTHING FROM THE OPPONENTS.
OF COURSE WE ALL FEEL SORRY FOR DAVE BUT I,M AFRAID THESE ARE SOME THE HAZARDS OF THIS NOBLE SPORT AND AS MUCH AS THE PLAYERS MAY OR MAY NOT THINK THERE WAS MALISCIOUS INTENT, I STOOD 20 YRDS AWAY AND I CAN ASSURE IT WAS JUST A HARD TACKLE (OBVIOUSLY THE SAME WAY THE REF SAW IT).
WHAT ARE YOU MEANT TO SAY IF ASKED WHAT DO YOU THINK THE OUTCOME WOULD HAVE BEEN !!!

1st of all lads don't read into all what the paper writes, no doubt sutton manager said what the ET printed but maybe not all that he said was quoted yeah? i'm sure that he was bothered about Dave.

now now foggy bit harsh calling him a t**t, but kinda understand how you feel as you have been there. so maybe STD you should chill out, this is a forum where all members post their opinions. foggy's is that your manager is a T**T!!! so what. i've been a T**T many times with my quotes in the ET sports pages it happens. :soo:

Take a chill pill STP - As Al said just an opinion and like he said been there and not nice - You?? Also, commented on your sec phoning as thought it was a nice touch - read the post!!

True - Et tend to write what they like but just feel your manager could have been a bit more tactful instead of bleating on about the game and how they would of won as had 10 men - No s**t sherlock!! .

Sorry to hear that you had 2 players with legs broken last year and that the opposition did not show any remorse but I did not also read there managers spouting on about the game and lack of 3 points and wanting a replay!! Fair point?? :soo:

Al - think I've called most managers a T**T at some stage whilst on the pitch but always have a drink after although spec never bought one!!

The point being that Mr Preston came across in the ET just as he came across on Saturday hence my original post. I’m sure that in the cold light of day he would not mean to appear to be only thinking of the three points.
As for the tackle STP – you are incorrect to say that the ref saw it as a hard tackle. You don’t get booked for hard tackles – you get booked for fouls. As you were only 20 yards away you will know he didn’t get near the ball…

The old guys in the bar said it was a bad tackle – however they also said we were the best footballing team they’d seen there for two seasons so maybe their judgement isn’t to be trusted!

Personally, I really hope that next time the two sides meet, that the game is a credit to football and that both sides get on with it and have a thoroughly competitive and sporting contest. I think that would be the noble sport to which you refer.

Foggy you are a cheeky C***, you still owe me a fiver from sponsoring your race night 10 years ago and you never called me a T**T or else you would never have got the chance to make a girl pregnant looking like the elephant man!!
I did act like a T**t sometimes when I was a manager though (strange really 'cos I'm quite a nice fella deep down)

Forgot to add, Thorneyfcboy, nice comment mate and I hope you are right a lot of things get said in the heat of the moment and shouldn't be taken too personally (unless some old has been, sicknote, tight arse calls you a twat of course!!)

Good luck in your recovery Dave.

I did a similar thing down at Stamford Bells playing for Pinchbeck and the ambulence took 35 mins so you beat my record by 10 mins!!

Be patient in your come back and all the best.

i think sometimes things are said in the heat of the moment that are offensive or hurt but are not ment to.

eg foggy i remeber playing against you for nags head vs bretton ne and you took me out with a late tackle & i lashed out at you coz it was a bad tackle & i should have been sent off. i turned round and said to the ref that i was mad at you coz i thought you were my mate! you said **** off i aint your mate? i only got booked & so did you for the tackle & that was reg parker & he likes his cards.

I will never forget that. it reminds me that sometimes people soon forget friends & sportmanship to win a game which sometimes makes you mad & sometimes sad like cheating linesman ha ha
