HOLBEACH UNITED RESERVES 0
WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 5
Att: 18
Whittlesey kicked off their league campaign off with a bang, as they gained a terrific 5-0 victory at Combination League 1 new boys Holbeach.
The Whittlesey side have been in good form in the pre-season winning 5 out of 5 and played some exhilarating football in their first competitive outing of the 2007/08 season.
As expected we came up against a tough and fit Holbeach side who came down from the UCL Reserve League. The opening 20 minutes of the game produced a good battle with Whittlesey having the better of the chances. Whittlesey struck first when on the half hour mark, striker Paul Hibbins was taken down in the box by the Holbeach keeper, resulting in a Whittlesey spot kick. Hibbins then duly tucked the penalty away in convincing fashion sending the keeper the wrong way. Holbeach pressed for an equaliser and nearly grabbed one moments later when a fierce free kick was fired towards the Whittlesey goal, only for Daniel Fletcher to make a fantastic save, Fletcher then picked himself up instantaneously to parry another goal bound effort away before the ball was cleared by the visiting defence.
Whittlesey continued to push for a second and had some fantastic chances to do so as Fletcher’s fantastic kicking was causing no end of problems for the home defence. On the stroke of half time Whittlesey deservedly made it 2-0 when a long throw into the box by Micky Gale was cleverly headed towards goal by Micky Burch, and it looped over the home keeper into the top corner.
Whittlesey started the second half very much as they meant to go on, Hibbins was foiled by a good save, before some excellent work out wide by Mick Burch lead to a fantastic cross being delivered into the box for strike parner Hibbins to head home in convincing fashion to make it 3-0.
The home side now looked shell shocked and Hibbins added a fourth when he jinked past a home defender before clinically finishing in the bottom right hand corner. Holbeach’s cause was not helped by the sending off of their skipper 10 minutes from time for kicking out at Burch more out of frustration than anything else. Midfielder Matty Heron added a fifth with a fantastic solo run and finish to mark a fantastic three points.
So, a fantastic start to the league campaign with a cracking result against a decent Holbeach outfit who i’m sure will win more games than they lose this term. It was good to get the season underway as our pre-season started in June so we have been raring to go for the last few weeks. The lads were in buoyant mood after the game and celebrated with a few beers, but they were all well aware that this is only the start of a long and challenging season ahead. We now focus our attentions to our first home game of the season againt Leverington on Saturday - COME ON
