Well it appears that my weekly absence has resulted in a number of
challengers to my crown as undisputed 'Pboro SportsTalk Sports Reporter' of the year.
So it's time for me to hit back with a vengeance in the form of a
report of our match on Saturday at home to Hampton Athletic.
The week building up to the match was eventful with a number of players
dropping out due to holiday's leaving our threadbare youngsters to
tackle a good Hampton side who had knocked us out of the PFA Cup earlier on in the season in an enthralling encounter. Our squad was bolstered on Saturday morning with the Lazenby brothers Scott and Jamie joining the Reserves due to the first team's encounter with Alconbury being called off.
The game got underway and the vibrant visitors looked lively in the
opening encounter with excellent movement up front and an energetic midfield. Whittlesey meanwhile struggled to get their usual slick passing game going and were out of sorts in the opening twenty minutes. Bob Dart then produced a rasping pile-driver that skimmed the Hampton cross bar and then just moments later Danny Baxter hit a fantastic curling shot that struck the Hampton cross bar again and bounced agonisingly just in front of the goal line.
Whittlesey were starting to get into rhythm but then a Hampton player
went to ground in the box and a penalty was awarded. The Hampton player stepped up and placed the ball to his left at height but an unbelievable save from Daniel Flecther, his third on the trot denied the visitors from opening the afternoon's scoring.
The whistle was blown for half time with the game at stalemate.
Whittlesey came out of the blocks for the second half very quickly and took the game to the visiting side, some good flowing moves saw Bobby Dart go close on a couple of occasions.
Fletcher was again in magnificent form for the home side producing two
world class saves that if were produced in the Premier League would be
talked about for weeks by the pundits. In the 75th minute 18 year old
wing back Lee Baker cut in from the right and unleashed an unstoppable
twenty yard shot that evaded the despairing lunge of the Hampton goalkeeper.
Whittlesey defended resolutely for the remaining quarter of an hour to
guarantee a very welcome and deserved three points.
Whittlesey's young side claimed another victory on Saturday to continue
their march towards the top of the Combination One table. The Fen side
also have a number of games in hand and are focused on finishing as
high up the league as possible. We have some very hard games coming up that will be challenging for us but the side is looking forward to every game and taking them one step at a time.
Starting with Chatteris Town at home on Saturday, a team we will be
hoping to complete a league double over.
