WHITTLESEY gained another fine away victory on Saturday defeating Oundle Town 2-0.
Following last Saturday’s morale boosting win against Moulton Harrox, the lads gained another three points in convincing fashion.
The visitors attacked up the famous ‘Oundle stoop’ on Saturday and although not playing their best stuff were comfortable in their afternoon activities. Despite some close efforts from the visitors, it looked as though both sides would head into the break at stalemate. However shortly before the half time whistle the referee spotted a push by ex Whittlesey centre half Shaun Harley on centre forward Micky Burch in the box and ordered a penalty kick. Up stepped Graeme Robinson who coolly sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and put the visitors in front.
The second half saw Whittlesey continue to control the afternoon’s affairs. 17 year old centre forward Stef Green swayed between two defenders in the Oundle box and was hauled down in what looked to be a blatant penalty, only for the referee to wave play on. Green stayed down and took a nasty knock to the ribs as he fell resulting in him being replaced by top goalscorer Ryan Smith. Shortly after Graeme Robinson was caught late and received a dead leg for his troubles and was also substituted, this was compounded just moments later when centre half Scott Ding also received a dead leg and needed to be replaced.
Young midfield Matthew Heron was starting to stamp his authority on the game and duly added the second from a corner when he climbed highest to nod home past the Oundle keeper.
As the second half wore on the pace of 17 year old Luke Quince began to cause numerous problems for the Oundle back line as he left them in his wake on a number of occasions.
As the second half drew to a close, Oundle were awarded a dubious penalty by the irrational referee, the Oundle player stepped up but his penalty was well saved by the Whittlesey keeper Daniel Flecther. The referee then decided to order the penalty to be re-taken as Fletecher was judged to be off his line. Fletcher was furious with the decision as his quest for a successive clean sheet was being threatened because of over-zealous refereeing. The same Oundle player stepped up to re-take the penalty but again Fletcher made an acrobatic save to his right to deny the home player.
Whittlesey pushed for a third goal with Quince coming close time and time again and Smith hitting the bar.
So another three points for the Whittlesey boys, and to think we were dubbed a team in crisis just a couple of weeks ago by our number one fan Mr J :bst:
This was a comfortable win, the boys can now look forward to a trip to Hampton Athletic on Saturday who dumped us out of the Cup earlier this season.
A special mention has to go to my very good friend Mick Burch A.K.A Bluestar who stepped down as Manager on Saturday to hand the reigns over to myself and Colin.
Mick had decided to step down at the end of the season but has decided to step down now and help myself and Col transition into the role, after managing for the best part of 30 years we can certainly learn from someone who knows what he is on about.
For those who know Mick will know that I don’t need to tell you what a good bloke he is. He epitomises what local football is all about, enthusiasm, loyalty and passion, not only is he a great football manager but also a great bloke. If me and me old pal Cozza can do half as good a job as what the big man has done we'll all be very pleased. Luckily for Whittlesey United he will still be around to help the club move forward in every way, shape and form.
Cheers Mick
