WHITTLESEY got back to winning ways on Saturday with a hard fought victory over visitors Moulton Harrox.
The away side came into this fixture on the back of four straight league victories while the hosts had lost their previous three games.
Whittlesey, missing four players went into the game on the back of a disappointing 2-1 Cup defeat to Chatteris FT the week prior and were in determined mood as they ran out of the dressing room for this important league encounter.
The home side started the game well playing some neat football and stretching the back line on the away side on a number of occasions. 17 year old Stef Green making his first start for two months following injury had some fine touches and interlinked well with strike partner Burch.
The physical Moulton side looked to be pinpointing 17 year old Right Wing Back, Lee Baker for special treatment with several bruising tackles inflicted on the Whittlesey youngster who marauded down the Moulton flank. Half way through the first half Whittlesey's pressure paid dividends when Baker evaded the challenge of a Moulton player and raced to the bye line where he knocked the ball back for Matty Heron to fire home from the edge of the box.
This goal encouraged the visitors to press forward, their number 6 who was built like a proverbial "Poo Villa" was having a fine game with through balls played onto their lively striker who at one point found himself one on one with Fletcher in the Whittlesey goal only to be denied by a fine save from Fletcher.
The second half commenced with Whittlesey battling against the wind as well as the physical presence of a typically tough Moulton side. Green went close for Whittlesey in the second half but dragged his shot just wide. Moulton then hit the woodwork after a good set piece and continued to pressure the home side with the size of their players being a threat in the box. Whittlesey continued to battle hard though and held out for the three points.
This win was a very satisfying one because the lads got last Saturday's poor performance out of their system and although they didn't play their best football of the season by any imagination they showed that they have battling qualities to see them through tough encounters against very physical teams with an average age much superior to ours own. Games like these are developmental for the many young players in their squad as they grow accustom to games where we really have to roll our sleeves up and 'have a go', a tradition that is always in keeping with Whittlesey sides.
This Saturday we travel to Oundle who themselves are on a reasonably good run. We'll meet with an old friend once more. We'll let the football do the talking.
