View Full Version : Do we take ourselves too seriously?

My dear friend Alan Swann opened up a debate on this subject in tonights ET.

I personally don't think I take myself too seriously and have my tongue planted firmly in my mouth on MOST of my comments (not against the PFA decision on the Carling Cup though - rant - rant - oops sorry - promised to let that drop!)

Generally I think that we are all level headed and realise that we are talking about the last level of football which can be enjoyed for what it is before money corrupts and takes over as you step up.

That does not mean we can't be passionate about winning and as you know I love it!

Pretty sure Alan will read this - so in terms of qualifications I have a cycling proficiency certificate, was once in the boys brigade and the Tufty club. Other than that it will just have to be the 13 years managerial experience and 16 trophies really on top of a senior playing career of 30 years and a 5 year refereeing career both of which featured football league involvement. Think that qualifies me ok - possibly better than a getting a job as a journalist with a background working for the council? (sorry but you've got to let us have a few digs too!)

That wonderful local journalist Alan Swann has obviously been stung into action by our good friend Chris Judge and his previous comments on this site - he now seems to have chosen other Peterborough league managers to practice his rapier like wit on. For those that didn't see Monday's ET Mr Swann chose to lay the bait for us bumkins in Whittlesey. Mr Swann we bear no grudges, and in fact in recognition of your outstanding footballing capabilities I have been enpowered to offer you the coach's job at Whittlesey United - let me know when you are ready to take on the role and I will make arrangements with your dentist to have your teeth taken out and seats put in!

boys the best way to play Mr swann is not to rise or bite back he loves it when you reply . I can see him now sitting there reading your reply's with great joy . tommy you have to master the art of taking it as well as dishing it out . you are very very good when it comes to dishing out the banter . you have Evan let number 9 get to you . think before you type. 1 . 0 Mr swann I thinks . :soo:

sorry "theboss" dont quite think you've grasped this yet buddy - we KNOW what Swanny is all about - most of us read his column, not all admit to doing it, and unless you come from another planet (or Coates) he's translucent in what he's trying to do - and thats the point, its called banter. Seems to me that Mr Swann has probably got guys like yourself to thank for his longevity in the role of the controversial hack, although even by his standards his ludicrous comments seem to have grown in recent months.
Finally, I dont think you "dig" Tommy Cooper at all! he has forgotten more about winding people up, and of poking fun at himself than Swanny will ever know, so don't worry Tommy has it under control, as always. :nwy:

tommy can you not speak for your self mate or is bluestar you or is it Mr judge . number 9 I think you may be right . if you read my post bluestar you will see that I was in fact trying to help you all out you just can't rise or bite back at Mr swann he is the best in the biz at giving it and taking it . I for one do read swanny's column and yes some of his comments do make you want to pull your hair out and send him an e-mail but lads do as I do read it then bin it . you will not beat him . tommy don't sulk in the corner because of what number 9 has said . number 9 you was a bit rude .

The Boss you need to make your mind up - if I respond I am biting, if I don't I am sulking.

Number 9, The Boss or anyone else hiding out there, if I want to talk to you it will be as Tommy the Ortonian - everyone knows who Bluestar is and Carefree plays for PSL and I know who it is, but it is up to him if he wants to reveal himself.

I do have a generic username I use sparingly at work if I want to join or stimulate debate, but don't want the posting to attract idiotic responses based on who I am rather than what I am saying. That does not make me any different to nearly all of the contributors on here who choose not to post under their real name.

And Number 9 I don't know who you are, but know a man who does - though I could not give a monkeys what you think about anything.

The fact that I have been approached by a UCL club for next season is common knowledge, so you are not revealing anything there and besides I have a league to win this year before I even start to worry about next season.

tommyc this topic is all about ( do we take ourselves too seriously ) your the one that started it and you yourself has said that it is common knowledge what U,C,L, team it is so let us no . its rude not to reply and as i' am not being rude and not slagging you off no more and you forgot to p,m, me . so tommyc who do you think could step into the hot seat at Ortonians . and do you think there will be manager movement at the end of the season in the prem.

There is only one man for the job and that is Billy Burton a big winner with Royal Oak and popular with players. he could have Robbo or Wilson as assistant but would Judgey approve of that or not

robbo
03-12-2005, 00:41
no thanks offside but it was nice of you to put me in front of wilson.but not happy that billy is in front of me lol.I dont think billy would work well with c,j, and I think billy would end up punching A,wilson lol.I dont really rate billy as a manager . you see with the oak team it pick it self thats how good the team is.you just have to look who the manager is now lol sorry lee. bye the way tommy coops is going no were we have got to get our P,F,A, CUP BACK . is that a better post t,c,. see you at 11.30am sat do I still need to bring my boots ???

Offside more like out of this world if you think we would let Billy B anywhere near running a side at Ortonians Any way be patient and wait for the biggest surprise of all times. I will wait for the silly guesses

The obvious 1 would be northern star or blackstones, big shock would be stamford, wisbeach, or grantham or alike teams below that no better than ortons and dont think thats going to happen in a million years to be honest, do you?

Well as for billy not being fit for the job it would be nice to see Tomy,Judge,Robbo, take over a poor side and not make all the superstar singings and turn average and poor players in to good players and as billy has done, as for me i don't think billy would be right for the leagues posh boys anyway he is to vocal you ponces you would walk out crying after five mins of him.Vince Elliot for the job.Would be nice to no who the ucl side who are intrested in tomy though are they top middle or bottom ? :blh:

OO7 I did not think your post deserved a relpy but just to prove how ignorant you are would just point out that Mark Baines was hardly a superstar when he joined Ortonians, Beeney was playing for Oundle Res, Lee Davison was 16 when he first joined Ortonians, Eddie Patten was playing in Division Five. Thing is Ortonians do not have a team of superstars and that is why they are so successful and you are so jealous

Tommy could manage in the UCL standing on his head. He is the best manager in the league and that is why he wins trophies every year no matter what club he is at.

It will be sad not to have him in the Peterborough league, because though he pi**es a lot of people off, he is great company and tremendous with supporters, the media and most importantly players. To be quite honest if he had the relevant coaching qualifications i would fancy him to end up in the football league, i think he is that good a tactician and motivator.

I take my hat of to him cause not only does he beat most teams on a saturday he is then able to wind them up on here! I for one think Tom will end up staying and joining Whittlesey at the end of the season, taking Number 9 as his number2, but whatever he does he will do what he wants and nobody else!

If Tommy even thinks about coming to Whittlesey, we will string him up - what drugs are you on jon w - the blokes an idiot - me and number 9 are planning to build him a nice little bonfire to keep him warm the next time we play Ortonians

CJ don't forget Matt Rayson from Sawtry along with JP, Matt Leftley from Eye Sports & Social, Darren Fogg from Silver Jubilee, Gav & Phil from the youth academy, Glen Bolden from the cast of "Oliver the musical" and Patryk Gawrysiak from Czfghtrdkmfngythgdsbfkj Warsaw.

Walt Disney studios took Darcy back for "The Little American 2".

Whilst on the subject of PNS, from whose bench we took Mark Baines, I can confirm that I receive approaches most Saturday's from Steve Phillips - to run their reserves. No seriously PNS are a club in decline and if I move would want to go somewhere with potential and was not just a sitting tenant beholding to a larger organisation and having to beg for use of the pitch - besides I am now too fat to fit into their bar!

Pot and kettle " the boss " ! I am very real, i do believe there are pseudo names on here, and i think it would be right they were exposed, but this time it's not the ortonians camp!!

Please feel free to disclose who you are and anyone else you know!! I felt it was right to mention tommy's strengths as a manager. I am a fan of Psl and Al is a top bloke but he would concede tommy is numero uno.

One worry for him though, his management might be prem but he dresses in clothes fit for combination div 4! With a name like "the boss" your surely a smarter dresser

Well, CJ i would disagree on mark baines but my point was not to hear of how wonderful you all are and how you have turned 'posh players in to arsenal ones but was to remind you that billy is not as bad as you think and by that reaction i think it has worked you could do worse than billy and am sure if billy was in charge you PFA cup run would still be on track. now that was management at its highest still i suppose you will disagree with that. ow and don't feel obliged to reply to this either.
