I think the ET deserve congratulating for laying on a fantastic evening last night, with most of the great and good of Peterborough Sport enjoying a cracking night.

The awards ceremony was set up well by Bob who gave an extremely amusing introduction sppech, slaughtering most of the gathered guests in one form or another. This was followed by the first award of the evening (Young Footballer of the Year) deservedly going to the Glinton u10 keeper Tom Pollitt (who hadn't let a goal in for a year!), who promptly burst into tears on stage and had most of the audience doing the same

Though the BBC Sports Personality Awards for 2006 were especialy lacking in quality, in Pam Sly, Martin Adams and Hans Anderson it was a far more vintage year for local sport. The only downside for me was the gymnast Louis Smith not receiving recognition for his gold medal at the Commonwealth Games.

Being fortunate enough to be on Bob French's table the night was always going to be enjoyable when your immediate company includes the likes of Tommy Robson, Phil Elmer, Mick Vincent, Dave Oxer & Gordon Steele.

The son I never had Mark Baines was overjoyed at finishing 2nd in the Footballer of the Year award to Mark Tyler who has now won it 4 times I believe. The fan base means that this award will always go to a Posh player (as it has for all 9 years) so Mark can console himself with being voted the best outfield player in the area!

It was also nice to see that Ortonians figured prominently in the top 6 - I did not vote for us and I am not aware of anyone else who did, so it was a pleasant surprise and thanks to everyone who did recognise our achievements.

Once again well done to all concerned and particularly the Panthers who took away most of the top prizes - even a dog that comes to watch them got on stage as a runner up in fan of the year!

Glad it was a good evening but I think it is now time that professional sportspeople were left out of this local awards business and leave it to the amateurs to win things that they richly deserve for all the time, effort and personal funding they sacrifice to get where they are.
The world of professional sport have there own honours and if they have achieved something recognisable then they will win something from them.
I know you boys at the ET read this site (that's where most of your stories come from anyway!!) so start the ball rolling and I will willingly sponsor an award and have a table at the evening, I know for a fact I am not the only one who thinks this so Mssrs French, Swann, Plummer and Millard listen to your paying public (especially as we make your jobs so bloody easy by supplying all your material).

Horrible though it sounds Spec, I find myself agreeing with you!

Though the voting system rewards those who can get the most forms filled in (and Paers sold!), generally the winners were pretty deserving, though the ET reporters have enough kudos and respect to possibly make a single award NOT voted for by the general public?
