View Full Version : Glory Hunters?

Just wondered what people thought of the glory hunters that seem to be dripping down the divisions of Sunday football? It used to be the odd player but now it seems like entire teams fancy using this quick route to silverware with examples including Royal Mail, Star Inn and Protelo?

I thought it was quite interesting to see the manager of Royal Mail saying in the ET last night how he cannot see his team being beaten by anyone this season. Rather a bold statement, but it was also diluted by saying how half of his team are made up of the Nags Head squad that used to win a lot of the top trophies around Peterborough up until a season or so ago. What happens if they do not win anything this season, are they considering applying to a local youth league?

 quality I like it...

I did hear that the manager you quote somehow got his team entered in the LOWER Northants cup for Sunday league clubs even though several teams below them in the league were entered into the higher one? He then brought half the Nags Head team and several other top Sat/Sun lads in to clean up!!!
Rumour has it the same guy was seen at a local under 12's game asking how to enter their league cup next year just in case his team failed to clean up in the league and cups he's got them into this time around

Of course we'd all love the players they have but I guess but the tongue in cheek point is why bother bragging about how great you are when you've dropped 3 or 4 leagues to win stuff?

Right I hear there's a Deaf Blind League team looking for a striker - I've got half a chance of a goalden boot trophy...
Don't let that manager know though as his lads will beat me to it.......

Berger you clearly dont know a great deal about what you are talking about. so what if a team has 1/2 a squad of an ex prem team where did the whole squad finish in the league last season? so with just half that squad isnt it only fair they start from scratch?
also you included the star inn there? because they have won a few games with the same players they have had for 3 years they are classed as glory hunters? get your head out the clouds, some of the players they have are players that cant get into another team and the rest are players that have stayed loyal to friends for a long time.
so do a bit of research before putting teams down.

Just because a team in a lower league attracts a few "stars" that doesn't make em glory hunters.
However if they are promoted next year and then these "stars" jump ship for another lower division team you can then point the finger.
BOTN, when you are in the process of signing a new player do you ensure he hasn't played at a higher level recently?
I detect a little bit of the old green eyed monster here lads!

Fair point about Star Inn.

However having half a team made up of players punching well below their standard (eg Royal Mail) should not have their manager waxing lyrical on how they will remain unbeaten for the rest of the season etc. I doubt if they win the league this year it will be amongst their greatest football achievements.

What are the odds on Royal Mail remaining unbeaten for the rest of the season?

Berger

No green eyed monster, just an observation on last nights article in the ET.

I reckon the comments could make for a few spicy games in that division in between now and the end of April.

nice one Harbs... I did think the Star Inn quote was a little much as they're loyal lads! although when we knocked em out of a cup recently they did seem to have drafted in 3 or 4 half decent Saturday lads that dont play for em week in week out - to be expected I suppose though!

But the point was mainly about the R Mail (it was them that was being mentioned in the paper by Berger wasn't it?) lads and that they should surely be plying their trade in a higher league and higher level cups???
Dropping down to that level from the Prem and then bragging about victories and going unbeaten is a little rich wouldn't you say? Others in that league have gone seasons building and maintaining their teams at that level only to see Pot Hunters dropping down the leagues to take the silverwear!
I'd have thought Div 1 would suit them better and then work up back to the Prem?
Just out of interest - We gave em a good game earlier in the season, ask their manager about him actually crying (I sh*t you not) to the ref for our lads to stop the hard tackles going in on him - he did have the last laugh though, cheating so and so handballed it in our area in the last minute and fired home the winner - even his own team struggled to believe the ref pointing to award the goal.. all good stuff though and I enjoy the chance to shoot down a team from perceived higher levels, but I can also understand others thinking it shouldn't be allowed.

Didn't the 3 Horseshoes do a similar thing a few years back? we were the only league team to beat them that year I believe, they walked the cups and league and then diss-banded, will R Mail do the same? I hope not.

Knowing the manager of R.Mail....he prob didnt know what he was saying the space cowboy!!! :pty2:

I actually know and like a few of the lads in the R Mail team and wish them all the best.... No Green Eyed Monsters here mate!
A perfect example of your comment happened today actually, I was approached by a mate to sign a young lad, I did indeed check who he plays for and why he wants to leave, I spoke to his Manager (current 1st div team) and I didn't end up signing him... he's gonna stick where he is for now..
So yes I do check actually and the main point here is that I would never sign half a bloody team from the Prem to walk Div 3 or 4 - whats the point???

If the R Mail lads all stick together and progress up the divisions then fair play to em, as I mentioned before - I actually enjoy the chance to play against em but I do understand how frustrating it is for others to watch it unfold as per 3 Horseshoes a few years back.

Oh and agree with Berger - it should motivate a few teams against them from now on, we won't need the motivation though, revenge on the 'space-cowboy' will be enough

im not really too fussed about the royal mail. they have in fairness always had a half decent side but i dont know much about them and from the sounds of things it hasnt benefitted them that much anyways?
The star is definately not a glory hunt unit and thanks for retracting it so we'll leave it there.
anyway im enjoying playing for the jubilee ever since i joined them last year so i could try and win the cup its been great!

Hopefully silverware will be distributed evenly again this season with the occasional darkhorse providing a few upsets. Now the season is halfway through any predictions on what wil happen in each division and the cups?

who is it you are with botn, bold statement by hempson that they will go all season without losing and abit of a silly one as im sure that we will prove a good match for them. and are also looking at trying to win things, and see no reason why we shouldntits amazing though when you are doing well how you can inprove your squad if i signed everyone on who has asked me would now have a squad of about 50 but am staying loyal to what i have if promotion comes and a trophy then so be it, but we will have done it with the same squad as last year.

I'm with EMAP mate, what about you?

I too have stuck with the same squad as last year, I lost Foxy (hampton) and Hamad (ex Netherton) plus an ex UCL striker this season so I replaced them with 3 lads - all of them mates and defo not Pot-Hunters.
Big big statement from Emps and it'll surely motivate teams playing against them - I get on with a few of the R Mail lads and they told me about how many Prem lads he brought in, it makes a bit of a mockery of the leagues when so many top players can just drop down to Div 3 but at least we get a chance to play against em and see how good we are against players from higher leagues...
As I said before, Emps cheated against us earlier in the season and scored the winner with 3 mins on the clock - he also quite literally CRIED to the ref as our lads put a few 'hard tackles' in on him, even his own lads cringed
All good fun though and I honestly wish him all the best and hope he keeps his team together for the next few years - if they clear up in the lower leagues then all diss-band to another team it wont look good!

im helping run fitzjohn so will bump into you at some point this season, i saw royal mail play the other week and they had a good side out all i can say is when and if they clear up this year that the league takes note and puts them where they should be nxt year.

As a friend of the royal mail manager i would just like to say that he indeed did not state that his team would not lose a game this season he actually stated that he did not expect his team to lose in the league this season , and as for them being glory hunters we have three old nags heads players one of them hempson him self (manager) , one that hardly played for nags in the last three years and one a very good friend of is hardly half a team boys, royal mail are still a team of nearly all postmen and darren himself has always stated he would finish his sunday morning career with royal mail just like he is doing . GOOD LUCK BOYS. :gun:

Berger
15-12-2006, 15:23
He was quoted as saying "There is no way we should lose a game all season. We want to win it all - league and cups, but the Northants Shield is the one we really want."

This makes your statement "he said the team would not lose a game this season he actually stated that he did not expect his team to lose in the league this season" wrong. :nono:

It looks like the title race for Division 3 could turn into a three horse race, plus possibly Werrington added to the equation. Remember there is still half of the season to go!

hahahaha.... most people posting on this topic have played against Royal Mail (us twice last year) last season and the season before!
I can tell you now for a fact that there was more than 3 additions to the team we faced previously and they all have or still do play at 'higher' levels...
Persnally it doesn't bother me too much and I wish him and the lads all the best, but come on - who you trying to kid? They finished 6th or something in Div 4 last year and we spanked em twice, since then we recognised 4 players remaining when we played em agian this term!!!
Oh and tell Hemps I'll bring him some tissues for our replay

as already stated that i see royal mail play the other week they was on a pitch nxt to us. and yeah they have a couple of decent players but not enough to be to worried about. sure it will be closer than hemps thinks at the end havent played them yet so to say he doesnt expect to lose a game will make it intereasting will be a hard game lets wait and see.

Who cares if he said it or not.Darren deserves some success with a team that has been close to his heart for years and after coming back from a horrible injury i for one will not begrudge the little man anything.I hope they do go through the whole season and win everything. There is a big difference between arrogance and confidence when speaking to the press. So good luck to them anyway.

Mail lost yesterday so not gonna win everything - Pepsshould get off hempos back. If he wants to run a side in a lower league and they win stuff so what, the next year they will go up at least one division and then they can try in that league also!!

Good luck hemps!!

just for the record, I have always said good luck to Hemps, I hope him and his team do well as I know how hard it is to run a side in the lower leagues -
I hope he keeps his side together and they progress up the divisions!
If they did lose yesterday unlucky mate! it's a nice cup to get a run in - we got to the Final and lost on Pens last year in that lower level Northants one but it was a brilliant cup run and a top day out for the final.
As for the banter and the tissues stuff, it was just a laugh and no hard feelings, if Hemps is in touch with his feminne side enough to be able to cry on the pitch then thats cool with us lot  - oh and if that was the worst tackle you've seen this season then how come Hemps after he'd finished crying got up with not a mark on him and was fine to finish the game? It was foul, and yeah it was a booking, both were given by the ref! I notice you're not mentioning the Handball he sneaked in for the winning goal in that game are ya?????
It's all just banter though and I hope we'll all share a  after our replay early Jan???

Good comments from Tommy F. Just to put the record straight Only Hemps and Joe Bailey played regurlarly for the Nags. Chris Crotwell hadn't played for at least three seasons. Mark Woodhouse also played occasionally for the Nag's but I understand he has now left Royal Mail. Part of the reason for the Nag's demise was that the team was getting rather "mature" so if a couple of the more mature ex-Nag's players drop down a few leagues to enjoy their football where's the harm. After watching a few premiership games this season I have no doubt that Hemps could still play in that league but I personally know that Hemps has wanted to play for Royal Mail for sometime but he showed loyalty and stuck with his team to the end, more than you can say for some people. Best of Luck to Hemps and Joe, good to see them still involved in Sunday football.

The team last year was half made up from parkway so naturally we have some new players.
