CHATTERIS TOWN RESERVES 0
WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 2
West Street
Att: 53
WHITTLESEY continued their rich vein of form on Saturday overcoming high flying Chatteris Town at a blusterry West Street.
The home side who were looking to make it seven consecutive league victories were outplayed by a Whittlesey side who grabbed the three points in convincing fashion.
The away side dominated the early exchanges on a heavy fenland surface, Micky BURCH twice went close for the visitors. On 18 minutes a corner by Bob DART looked to have crossed the line with huge appeals from the Whittlesey players falling on deaf ears as the referee waved play on much to the frustration of the visiting players who claimed the ball was was a good foot over the line.
Whittlesey played some fantastic stuff out-battling their counterparts in an entertaining encounter, with the locals becoming restless at seeing their usually dominant side being given a hard time by their visiting Fen counterparts. Whittlesey's dominance paid dividends half way through the first half when Micky BURCH superbly turned his marker and smashed home an unstoppable 30 yard shot that looped over the despairing dive of the home keeper. Whittlesey continued to control the game, closely marshalling Town's energetic midfield and breaking down their play bursts from midfield.
The scores on the doors at half time 1-0 to the visitors.
The second half started with Whittlesey slowly getting to grips with the swirling wind which they were faced with. Shortly into the second period, an excellent through ball from the impressive Ryan SMITH was latched onto by an enterprising Daniel BAXTER who laid the ball across the box for midfield counterpart Matthew HERON to slot home from close range, an excellent team goal that emphasised the fantastic team work and morale for the boys from Whittlesey.
The visitors could have added more, as HERON, BURCH and SMITH went close with some good chances while Chatteris would kept well at bay by an excellent defensive performance from the Whittlesey back line, with their efforts on goal restricted to long range efforts.
The game filtered out and the final whistle was met with fists punched high in the air from the Whittlesey players who put in an excellent performance to topple the high flying home side and raise a few eyebrows across the local footballing community, however this apparently doesn't appear to have taken place in the blinkered eyes of the ET Towers whose dislike for Whittlesey continues with their lack of recognition for the accomplishments of their two sides.
Make no mistake about it this was a fantastic victory for a travelling Whittlesey side that chalked up their fifth successive victory in all competitions. Despite this victory the lads were very much focusing their minds on Saturday's home encounter with Long Sutton who will prove very difficult opposition.
COME ON BOYS!!
