Whittlesey United 2
Oundle Town 0
The Manor
Att: 62
Whittlesey made it four consecutive victiories as they swept away the challenge of visiting Oundle Town on Saturday afternoon.
Former Whittlesey player and Oundle Centre Half Mr Harley was left to eat a very large slice of humble pie as his earlier predictions of an away win were dealt a very significant blow from a Whittlesey side that claimed a comfortable victory.
The home side were faced with a big blow just moments into this encounter as last week's five goal hero Stef GREEN landed awkwardly in the turf and had to come off with a twisted knee.
Whittlesey dominated the open passages of play with a new look midfield eager to stamp their authority on the game, 17 year old Bob Dart moved into the centre of midfield from his usual position of Left Back as Matthew HERON was unavailable for team selection and did himself proud with an assured performance.
Despite Whittlesey's dominance, Oundle produced the best chance of the open exchanges when a snap shot which looked to be heading for the top corner, but the impressive Daniel FLETCHER in the home goal produced yet another world class save.
Whittlesey deservedly took the lead on the 20 minute mark when some good work from front man Micky BURCH set up an opportunity for DART to cooly slot home to make it 1-0. Whittlesey pressed for a second but the scores on the doors at the break were 1-0 Whittlesey.
The second half saw Whittlesey start rather nervously with Oundle winning many of the second balls, however Whittlesey regained their composure 10 minutes into the second haf and played some excellent football. Ryan SMITH added his tenth of the season when he capitalised on some poor Oundle defending to race one on one with the Oundle keeper and keep his composure to add a Whittlesey second.
Whittlesey defended superbly throughout with the ever impressive David TAYLOR producing another fine performance along side the equally impressive Scott DING and Ray GALE. Daniel BAXTER and Graeme ROBINSON worked tirlelessly in the middle of the park winning and distributing the ball effectively. The home side continued to control the game and should have added 3 more, with the Oundle keeper in fine form preventing certain goals from Dart, Baker and Quince.
So in summary an excellent three points with the whole team playing extremely well as a unit and a win that was made all the more sweeter because of our ex-player's sweeping Saturday morning statements, BTW he never did buy me that beer!
Here's hoping for another win at Ramsey on Saturday!
