WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 4
STRETHAM HOTSPUR 1
Cambs Cup
Manor Leisure Centre
Att: 102
A bumper crowd at The Manor saw Whittlesey return to winning ways on Saturday in comprehensive style as they swept away the challenge of Stretham Hotspur to reach the next round of the Cambs Cup.
A fine display from the home side saw a relatively easy progression into the latter stages of this season's competition. Whittlesey started very well and were extremely dominant in the opening passages of play. Centre Half David TAYLOR played his first competititive game in 2 years for the reserves on Saturday as he eases his way back into first team contention, Taylor was a class apart with his excellent communication and domineering presence at the back a joy to watch and a huge bonus for the team. Whittlesey deservedly took the lead on 20 minutes when a fine cross field ball by Ryan Smith found young wing back Bobby Dart who floated in a fantastic ball into the box which was met by centre midfielder Danny Baxter who slotted home from close range.
Whittlesey continued to control the game well, with the combative Graeme Robinson producing a solid display, making some fine tackles in the middle of the park and frustrating the visiting sides play. Whittlesey duly added a second moments later when 17 year old midfielder Matty Heron smashed home an unstoppable 25 yard volley to make it 2-0. Spurs grabbed one back moments before half time when a goal mouth scramble resulted in a visiting striker smashing home to make it 2-1. The sides went into the break with Whittlesey 2-1 up.
Whittlesey came out of the blocks second half very much like they had the first and pushed for a third to wrap the game up, this deservedly came on the hour mark when Heron added his second of the game with a fantastic placed pass, a la Thierry Henry which evaded the despairing lunge of the visiting keeper.
Stretham battled well and played out the game in good spirit fighting for every ball and not letting their heads drop, however it was the home side who continued to push forward and in the dying moments Ryan Smith raced through to complete a satisfactory day at the office for the lads making it 4-1.
So Whittlesey get back to winning ways and can look forward to the next round of the Cup, the home side were the worthy winners in this contest and unlike the previous few weeks took their goalscoring opportunities well. The comeback of David Taylor was a big boost for the football club as a whole and the displays of all of the team were extremely pleasing. Another pleasing point was the performance of Matther Heron, last years Players Player of the Year, Heron, has endured a frustrating start to the season's campaign with injury keeping him on the sidelines but he now looks to be back to top form again much to the delight of all at Whittlesey. Also of note was young Stefan Green's goal for the first team to give them a share of the spoils at Oundle, Stef has been in great form for the reserves this season producing some dazzling displays and produced a fine display for the first team on his debut for them.
Whittlesey can now look forward to another Cup match on Saturday against fellow Fenlanders Wisbech St Mary's at the Manor.
COME ON!
