Whittlesey crashed out of the PFA Junior Cup at the first hurdle on Saturday against fellow Combination 1 Rivals, Hampton Athletic. Unavailability at pitches meant that this match was switched to a neutral venue in the Werrington Sports Centre.
The first of three consecutive Cup matches started brightly for Whittlesey with midfielder Matthew Heron's deft lob enough to trouble the Hampton keeper. Some swift interplay from Whittlesey and fine saves from the home keeper also denied Lee Baker and Ryan Smith opportunities to chalk up a goal for the visiting side. On the 25 minute mark a ball in the box was not dealt with by the visiting defence and the Hampton striker smashed the ball home from close range to give them the lead. Moments later Hampton added a second when Whittlesey keeper Daniel Fletcher rose to catch a looping ball but was looked to be impeded by the challenging Hampton forward resulting in Fletcher spilling the ball, the Hampton forward tucking away the resulting spilt ball and the home side taking a 2 goal advantage. This looked to be a blatant foul on the goalkeeper but the referee deemed the challenge to be fair, much to the annoyance of the Whittlesey side. The referee's mistake caused more controversy than a Madonna adpotion case.
Hampton took their 2-0 advantage into the break despite Whittlesey playing some good football at stages in th first half the home side had picked up most of the second balls and were winning some of the key battles in the midfield area. Whittlesey went to a 4-4-2 formation at HT and this seemed to pay dividends as Whittlesey steamed out of the blocks and applied immediate pressure upon the home side. Heron again went close for Whittlesey but it was young Luke Quince who supplied the first of Whittlesey goals neatly slotting in past the advancing Hampton keeper.
At this stage there was only one team in the game as Whittlesey's passion and desire took the game by the scruff of the neck and they duly pulled back the game when Ryan Smith's shot avoided the despairing lunge of the home keeper to level the scores. Hampton were now rattled and looked to be ready to cave in, this time Whittlesey forward Mick Burch went close again with a spectacular effort.
With 15 minutes remaining though, a long ball at the far post was not dealt with by the Whittlesey defence and in squeezed a Hampton player to bundle the ball in and put the home side undeservedly back in front much to the frustration of all the Whittlesey lads. Whittlesey again pressed for an equaliser to take the game into extra time, but were undone again when a long shot squeezed agonisingly under the body of Whittlesey stopper and best goalkeeper in the league Daniel Fletcher for a 4th Hampton goal. Late on in the game the home side caught Wsey on a counter attack and added a fifth goal to deflate the second Wsey comeback charge.
In summary the result on Saturday totally flattered the Hampton boys with a second half performance from the Wsey boys which deserved the win. The Wsey management team could not fault the effort of all the lads in the second half with some excellent performances from all the lads, unfortunately it wasn't to be and the lads need to get back up for another cup match this coming Saturday this time in the Cambs Cup against Ely side, Stretham Hotspur at the Manor.
