Pop Quiz
A Player who has given 26 years loyal service to his club is reaching the end of his career. In recent years he has taken training, been bag man and first aider and helped out whenever he could.
What would you do?
would you
a) take him out for dinner on behalf ot the club, and thank him for a quarter of a century of service or
B) say "you've got 4 days to return your tracksuite top, or we will take further action. You've been nothing but a pain in the a s s this year" and hang up on him.
I know what I'd do, but obviously it works different with a particular premier division club.
But hey. What do I know?

No one got anything to say on the subject?
What would Perkins do? Hotopint? Moulton? Would be interested to know.
Ortonians, you've usually got a lot to say for yourself. Not keen to join in on this one........?

It's got to be (A) for me & probably the same for most people ! well i hope it is ? If (B) is the route that any club has chosen to go down then i feel it is a disgrace . I personally have the upmost RESPECT for the guys that give up their weeknights & weekends for the clubs that they love, i know that at Moulton there are guys who do exactly what you have done for the past 26 years ( ex-players/groundsmen/lino's/committee members & allround nice men ) and i know that they wouldn't get treated in that manner, because as a player i would lose all respect for the club because if you get treated like that after 26 years service then why should it be any different for just a player . Thats exactly what makes a club like Moulton an attractive place to play your football , a good atmosphere in and out the dressing room is essential for a successful football team !

I agree, and if there was a hard working individual connected with Ortonains who fitted your description, then they would be treated accordingly
I would say it iscertainly A but if you have been a pain the ass to the club for the last season perhaps you did not deserve a dinner

looks like many of the clubs are in agreement , moulton , ortonians , netherton would like to think they would appriciate hard working people for the club .
any other clubs have a view?
why the random question anyway?
what do i know?-you obviously have a bee in your bonnet on this subject regarding an individual/team? why not name and shame them if you feel they have harshly treated someone in this manner?

Reassuring to see that most teams agree that A) is the only way forward. Must say my faith in some football teams had taken a bit of a knock after hearing this story.
All I will say is that either people within Ortonians disagree with the correct course of action...given that Tommy said A).
Or......
they disagreed with my original definition of the person.
26 years is a bloody long time to have played for a club to be talked to like that.

Sorry to stop the game playing and the hiding behind names etc. etc., but I now assume that we are talking about Roland Dean, though I don't think he is old enough to have been at Ortonians for 26 years? - I thought he was manager for Perkins for a bit?
He has of course been a great servant to Ortonians in the past, and though this is only my 3rd season in charge of the club, I am grateful for all of the help that Roland gave me during my first year, rightfully recognised with the clubman of the year award.
Not seen much of him since, and given Roland's shy nature I am sure that he does not want a song and dance made about calling it a day, especially following a rather drawn out 18 months of indecision over what he wanted to do etc. He goes into retirement or someone beginning with "N" with our best wishes.

well its at least good to see somone from ortonians to recognise a persons hard work for a club which has been kind to him and he has shown good loyalty too . . . shame not all people from ortonians can say the same thing . i also know hes not the first either to recieve such a harsh departure from the same club

I did not want to comment on this Roland Dean affair but there are a couple of things that need clearing up. Roland left the club four days before he was told he had been a pain in the ass. Over a number of years he has been a big help at this club but not so much in the last two seasons when he has been difficult.
As for you Eddie I will not go into detail on why you departed our club as I am sure you would not want the incident dragging up again
That is my last word on it

well thats all right then.
So long as he was given 4 days between leaving the club, and being threatened with further action and being called a pain in the ass then that's completely normal and acceptable.
My appologies.
:stpd:
Ok. I understand there are several others (not mentioned in this thread) who left under a cloud and were harshly spoken to...

in my previous posting i wasnt refering to my departure 2 years ago after being with the club for 6 years but indeed others who had been with the club for a longer period of time only to recieve the same sending off . . .
as for chris not bothered if u like to drag up the affair from 2 years ago . not got anythin to hide .
id like to thank u though to be honest . because if u had not had told me that i will never ever play for the club again i may still be sitting on that bench until i was 46 ofering to help in anyway i can through social events and fund raisers , only then to be told im a pain in the ass when i leave . thank you .
hopefully some people can learn from this and become a little more appriciative when appropiate to do so .but i doubt it
Having read some of these posts you cannot hel thinking that if Ortonians treat players so badly why have they been so successful. its looks like there be two side to the story cos Tommy and Judgey both seem to think that Dean was difficult in the last two seasons.
Lot of sour grapes if u ask me where do u play now eddie

top band u seem to have missed the point . the point is not the players bein ill treated as such , but the lack of even a thank you after so much service to a club . netherton .
I did not miss the point As I said two sides to a story but u playin for Netheton expains a lot
not got a lot to say about this one.
However it doens't take much to shake a hand and wish someone well when they move on, whatever the situation.
Not sure that there is a correlation between being successfull and treating people well. I'm sure you can have success and manners at the same time. I'm sure many clubs achieve this.
i think the only relevance that eddie playing for netherton has is that it means he knows the player well and obviously knows his feelings on the matter.
will say one thing though i have been at netherton for about 5 weeks on a sunday and i'm getting a transfer already to help a mate out at another club but i've been wished all the best and am welcome back at any time-not bad considering i feel like i'm dumping on them leaving so soon!

In defence of the Ortonians management, I remember Roland well from my Brad days and he has indeed been an Ortonians man for a long time.
I also remember that he was a bit "quirky" to say the least and prone to temper tantrums every now and then.
I have heard that he has spat his dumy out on regular occassions over the last few years and just because he has been at Ortonains a long time shouldn't give him the right to be a right pain in the a**e?
what do I know?

was still a disgrace.
If you can't shake a mans hand and wish him the best then there's something wrong with a club.
Especially given that there have bene about 4 incidents of a similar nature.
It's not hard to be nice to one another....
You seem to KNOW a lot.
Well did Roland resign over the phone or in person just that it is hard to shake any ones hand on the phone ortheir neck come to that :soo:
According to Baxter it seems Tommy and Judgey were not wrong about the problems but they did say at one time hegave good service
Who were the other four who left with a flea in their ear. I did not know there were so many that had been there as long as dean
And are u a Nethetron man too or Roland himself may as well come out of the closet now
