I read Mondays ET and Swanny says
Swann said: "The brawl was by far the worst thing I have seen in 20 years of being involved in local football as a player and a referee. It was absolutely disgraceful
That refers to the game he was in charge of between West Town and Woodston and if you read Mondays ET he blames Eduardo Goncalves as the instigator of the trouble and he sent sent him off.
But it was not Eduardo and on Thursday the ET says that the referee sent off Arlindo Pereira. There is no apology to Goncalves or that that Swanny cocked it all up.
I hope Goncalves sues the ET over the Mondays report which is the most libelous piece of journalism I have seen for years.
If Swanny wants to report on games he is charge of he should at least get his facts right. After all this this is man who criticises Posh every week as some sort of soccer god. What makes matters worse isthat the Et have then developed this into an assasination of Sunday soccer with all and sundry airing their views.
Would they have made the same comments if they knew Swanny had cocked up and put in a poor performance as referee

"Swanny"

"get his facts right"

Isn't there a law against combining those two terms in the same sentence ? I'm sure there is you know :ndg: !!!

Journalists are in a world of their own guys, facts don't sell newspapers, sensationalism does that's why we all get misquoted on a regular basis but at least they are highlighting something we have been saying for the last 3 years and hopefully it is not too late to save Sunday morning football.
However having Nick Titman in charge of leading the Save Our Sunday Morning Football Campaign is like going deer hunting with an air raid siren.
There is more than a coincidence that since he came on to the commitee as acting secretary he has done exactly that, act at it and look at the state of it now. Bull in a china shop springs to mind.

Agree with most of what's been said on this topic, we all know Swanny is a prat. You really should have realized by now that the best way to deal with journo's of this ilk is to ignore them, everytime you reply to one of his "rants" you give him exactly what he is after, PUBLICITY!
I know its an old ethos but why not try ignoring him, you never know, his editor might think whats the point in employing him if he can't succeed at the ONE thing he's good at ie: winding up his readership.
The one thing i can't agree with is all this "sue him" rubbish, lighten up guys, its only a game!

i agree too but the wierd thing is that for someone who seems to know nothing about football he's an excellent ref!(based on a number games i've seen or been involved in).

i know for certain though that some of the things in his column are tongue in cheek comments specifically worded to get a response whether it be positive or negative. you've gotta hand it to him he knows how to work his readers and keep them captivated which is his job isn't it?!?

at the very least what he writes is always fun to read and people shouldn't let themselves get too worked up by things as you're only playing into his hands. i agree that wrong facts and mis-quotes are out of order if apologies aren't issued.

I have no complaints at all on my quote in the E.T. It was almost word for word what I said. You don't have to be a genius to work out that Sunday Morning Football is sliding. We are losing refs left right and centre. It's so easy to criticise the standard of refereeing but without them we have no league. Understand what you are saying spec but I am afraid the real culprits are the players. They are cutting their own throats with their constant bickering and challenging almost every decision made. You have seen it yourself on Sunday Mornings. You can see it being inbred into kids as young as nine in the Junior Leagues and then again in the Premiership by people who are meant to be "Professionals"I have always been involved in local soccer, I perhaps may not have played such a high standard as some of the Prima Donna's that I watch on week-ends but I'm bloody sure that I will have been involved a lot longer than most of them. My point is that I love local soccer and I don't want to see ot fade to oblivion, players and managers, coaches have to take a long look at themselves before they lay the blame on refs and committes.Sure its great to win trophies but at what cost ?

In all the years I have been at ortonians I have always avioded signing any player who may be a problem on the pitch and always prefer to watch good football than players slugging it out.

No wonder the ref got confused on this one, is it Edwardo or Eduardo? how about everyone refers to him as Ed.
Most good journalists would have noticed this before posting their response.

cant remember who actually wrote the collum on the back page , but agree no names should of been mentioned unless sure about exactly the player involved . i understand that swanny didnt know names were going to be mentioned as in many other incidents which happen names are not normally used. either way think people are forgetting it was still a disgraceful incident whoever involved and hope both teams feel ashamed . bloody hell its football , id rather have 2 or 3 leagues of people who want to play footy instead of 5 or 6 leagues where 9 teams want to show of there boxing skills and 9 teams want to abuse referees.

agree with eddie! managers and club committee's have to be stronger managers often excuse players behaviour cos of said players ability. but committee's run clubs. of course players need to be competetive but anything more boot them out of your club

Judgey has always been someone who has told it as it happens
I have seen Eddie play on Sunday morning and he is not the sort of player to a have a go at someone even when he has taken some bad tackles.
I agree something has to be done about unruly players but you should make sure to get the right ones too

Gentleman,

Must admit, ive been quite gripped by this thread, but feel it necessary to mention this. There have been some posts that are incinuating people are liars, cheats etc. This will not be tolerated, if this trend continues, threads will be closed/deleted, due to the fact we dont really want people slagging other people off. Of sourse, people are entitled to their opinions, but when it gets too personal, ie, calling people names etc, threads will be closed/deleted.

I like a good debate as much as the next man, but as mentioned above, is name calling the best way to go to get your point across? In my opinion, no, so can we please refrain from the mud slinging, and keep things civil. I will leave this thread open, but will be keeping a close eye on it, so that things dont get too out of line

This forum was provided to air your views and opinions about the local football scene, so lets try and keep it that way.

Thank you

Been very interesting shame it has dried up.
Surely the players had numbers on their shirts when Swanny sent his West Town player off and he had a team sheet. Most refs note the number and name.
Also cant help thinking from Swannys words that he may be jealous that Judgey worked on a national and hes on the Telegraph but could be wrong.

i know people who played in a friendly against westown a few years back and that match was also abandoned due to a mass brawl. not surprised to hear it happen again with them and the fact it has tells its own story!

i know there are the odd players who regularly get into diciplinary trouble but to the best of my knowledge this is the only time in recent years that a team has had more than one game abandoned for this reason.

Wasn't aware West Town had previously had a game abandoned, if true then lets hope they get the book thrown at them, even if it was a "friendly" last time.
Went down to Ringwood last Sunday to watch Lord Westwood V Silver Jubilee ( as a neutral ) and I am very pleased to tell you all that maybe the spirit of Sunday football isn't dead after all!
I was rewarded with a hard, entertaining game played in the right spirit, sure some hard tackles went in but that had to be expected considering the attrocious conditions.
I must also congatulate the ref on his common sense approach to showing cards, he took into consideration the conditions when a few mis-timed tackles went in, and also showed he has a sense of humour when he got "ribbed" by the crowd about that awful shirt he had on. There is a lesson to be learnt here, treat players like adults and they respond in a positive manner! Other refs PLEASE take note.
The fans of both teams lined up next to each other and when both goals went in responded with humour even though they were obviously disapointed at conceding.
I'll just leave you with this poser: If the Westwood had TWO games abandoned due to a brawl, would they still be in the league?

jb

good point if they had ONE game abandoned for this reason i'm sure they'd be lucky to survive in the league(a bit like the turkish fans for example causing trouble in turkey and a blind eye is turned yet when fans cause trouble at 1 english game whether it be domestic or internationally they're threatened with expulsion and bans).

i must say though after being involved with the westwood for about 5 years i've always been told that there's never been any serious trouble at any games for the whole of their history(i may be wrong but thats what i've been told!) so even though they're probably the most feared opponents due to the entourage they are probably the most exciting and atmospheric games the sunday league can produce.
