The Peterborough Saxons are back in action this Sunday when they welcome fierce rivals, the Cambridge Cats to Stanground College for one of the biggest league games this season.

The Cats sit top of Division 2 East with a perfect 4 – 0 record but the Saxons are hot on their heels having won three of their four games so far. Ironically, their only defeat came on opening day as an injury hit side lost 7 – 6 to the Cats in Cambridge.

The Saxons have been on a roll in recent weeks, winning three in a row including an 80 – 0 victory over the Milton Keynes Pathfinders a fortnight ago. That record breaking win came at Stanground, and General Manager Mark Kerr is hoping that home field advantage will once again pay dividends.

“I know how passionate the people of Peterborough are when the city goes up against Cambridge, and I hope that will be reflected on the sidelines this weekend”

“There is so much at stake on Sunday; it won’t be for the faint hearted. With local bragging rights and top spot in the division up for grabs, we’re expecting a very physical game; it’ll be a war out there and the twelfth man could be the difference maker”.

Admission is free of charge with refreshments available from 2pm. Kick off is at 2:30 and families are welcomed, there will also be an opportunity for fans to meet the players post game in the Powerleague bar.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I know American Football isn't the most popular sport amongst footy fans (especially after the Wembley game this year! lol) but i guarantee this fixture will convert you.

Despite trailing by a game, we've scored more points and conceeded less than the Cats, but with a few key players returning from injury, we think we've got the tools to turn that opening day result around and seal top place in the division.

It'll be real physical out there...just how a big derby game should be. Really hope you can make it out, the more the merrier!

hope you beat the scumbridge mate - not my game though as getting padded up and chasing an egg around the pitch doesn't do it for me...

This is Sports Talk not Football Talk and other sports should follow suit too . . . like the local RFU & cricket? There must be some good controversy!

Thanks Raph, like everyone else, we're just trying to get our name out there and raise our profile, we rebranded from 'East Midland' To Peterborough Saxons this year specifically to target the passionate sports fans in the city and it seems to have paid off, Marshall Dodge sponsored us almost £3000 for a new uniform, the ET after years of perseverance are finally running our match reports, and we've had a full page spread in ESP every month for the past 4 so hopefully we're doing something right on AND off the field.

In fact Raph, i'm also very good friends with Pino Soccio so the Saxons and SS PIO often share ideas back and forth :p

We should get a little co-op going on between the Saxons and SSPIO then - since we are a multi-cultural sports society. Should get some Italian American interest from over the pond?

unlucky at the weekend Saxons, i enjoyed the game, couldnt believe it when your man ran like 80 yards to have his touch down over ruled and was purplexed as to why you couldnt have banter with the opps... the ref constantly saying i will not tolerate you calling the away team they are here to play football... whats wrong with a little banter.

20 - 0 AGAINST SCUMBRIDGE! I thought matey said they had a good chance of beating them now a few players are coming back!
Was there a good crowd?

Harbs
10-06-2008, 13:04
there was,
if you had seen the game you'd realise the 2-0 scoreline didnt justify the efforts of the saxons.
it should have been 7-7 at one stage which would have then created a different finale of the game but they were wrongly dissalowed a touchdown.

Hey guys,

Sorry we didn't deliver on the result, you win some you lose some i guess, naturally we're gutted not because we lost, but because we beat ourselves.

Cheers Harbs, we've challenged that descision with the referee's association, and i believe they've admitted to making a mistake, dosen't and can't change the result but if that score had stood, and what a score it was, it would have definately changed the course of the game for sure.

We also had a dropped pass in the endzone which would have opened the scoring and another drop on our sideline where our reciever had a good couple of yards on the defender, the Cats didnt look close to scoring in the first half only doing so on that huge TD pass (Their Quarterback has played college football back in the US)

Second half we lost our composure a little, got a little rattled and it showed, got into slanging matches and debates with the refs instead of playing ball and it cost us. All credit to the Cats *i feel dirty* they were very fortunate to get away with a TON of holding, but they got the job done and we didn't.

As for the 'banter' from what i understand there was a lot of it taking place on the field to the point the refs got so sick of it, they silenced us on the sidelines to keep things under control.

Nevermind, it's back to the drawing board - we have Essex at home this Sunday, 2:30 kickoff. Time to show our 'bouncebackability'

Raph, meant to come over and say hello at the PIO do last Friday night, my apologies, but yeah i definately see a number of ways we can work together.

yeah i didnt realy say anything about their quarter back but wow he had one hell of an arm on him. very impressed.
and i saw the drop in the enzone shame.
think it was the same guy that dropped the ball at the side?? it was all there for the taking but wasnt to be.
depending on what time i have to meet up with the old man syunday (fathers day)... will hopefully come down to give you a little support again

Just to keep you all up to speed, we bounced back from our loss to Cambridge this Sunday with a 59 - 6 demolition of the Essex Spartans.

We play our final home game of the season at Stanground College this Sunday, kicking off at 16:00.

Where did you finish in the table Saxons?

Saxons GM
23-06-2008, 08:43
Another big win this Sunday, we beat the Watford Cheetahs 45 - 8.

Sneeks, that win should pretty much secure second place in the table and a playoff place, so even though we haven't won the division, we should still qualify for the playoffs and a chance at the National Championship.

Where do the playoffs take place?

Saxons GM
23-07-2008, 11:17
Been a hectic couple of weeks, with away trips to Watford (won 41-0) and just last Sunday, Plymouth, which we also won, 45-0.

So apologies for not replying sooner, been lots going on.

As it stands, we sit in a playoff place, and need a win against Bedford on Sunday 17th August to secure home field advantage in the first round.

If all goes to plan, we will host either the East Kent Mavericks or the Colchester Gladiators on Sunday 21st August at Stanground College.

A win sets up a potential quarter final matchup....away to Cambridge!

Revenge is on the cards Peterborough. I promise you.

The Marshall Dodge sponsored Peterborough Saxons completed their regular season in front of over 1000 fans at nearby RAF Alconbury this Sunday, defeating the Bedfordshire Blue Raiders 35– 3.

The win gives the Saxons a club record 8 regular season wins, and seals home field advantage in the first round of Playoff games, starting this Sunday (24th) when they welcome the visiting Cornish Sharks to Stanground College.

After a scoreless first quarter, Marius Lodoen lit up the crowd with a brace of touchdowns in the second period with Adam Gumbs rounding out the first half scoring with his first touch of the game, pulling in a Ronnie Foster touchdown pass.

The Blue Raiders opened the second half scoring, their only points of the day courtesy of a 35 yard field goal, to which the home side responded immediately, Bobby Amissah returning the ensuing kick off almost 90 yards for a touchdown.

Courtney Pope sealed the win with a dazzling leap to steal the ball from two Blue Raiders defenders, ghosting past a would-be tackler on route to his 10th score of the year and James Hilliard, perfect all day added his 5th extra point to seal the deal crowning the Saxons first ever winners of the ‘Tri-Base Bowl’.

It was another solid performance from the Saxons Defence, with Wayne Gumbs, Martin Ayres and Aaron Gepp breaking up passing attempts, and providing some much needed pressure up front, with both Eddie and Mark Nash, as well as Primo Dabrowski and Kenny Hyatt recording sacks at crucial times.

General Manager Mark Kerr said “Today was an incredible experience for us all, we sampled ‘The American Dream’ - Huge thanks go to all of those who made it possible, and to my players and coaches who conducted themselves impeccably”

“Now we have to switch focus to the Cornish Sharks, a tough opponent and a must see game for anyone who’s yet to come and watch the Saxons in action. Three more games stand between us and the National Championship, don’t miss this one”
