PFA Junior Cup Final
Childers Club played host to some very very drunk individuals on Friday evening after a 1-0 win by Whittlesey United had bought the first piece of silverware back to the town since Whittlesey United's Premier Division winning campaign back in 2005.
On Friday evening Whittlesey played fellow Combination One side Deeping Sports in a tense PFA Junior Cup Final. The sides had met each other twice already in the league this season. The first encounter at the Manor saw Whittlesey run out 3-1 winners back in February while just two weeks ago we went down 3-2 to a last minute Scott McKenzie goal at Outgang Road so this encounter was firmly in the balance.
Whittlesey were forced to make the changes for this one with an equally important league game at Fletton less than 24 hours later on the agenda. The lads that came in all started well though as Whittlesey eased their way into the game and played some decent stuff. Lee Baker looked back to his best, wide right in the first half delivering some excellent balls into the box. Midfielder Matty Heron was left wounded when he challenged for an aerial ball and took a smack to the eye which resulted in a nasty cut, despite the blow gutsy Heron carried on with the aid of a pot of vaseline stuck on his right eye!
Whittlesey had the best chance of a tense first half when Stefan Green's quick feet worked an opening in the box and he thread the ball across the goal mouth but a Whittlesey player failed to get on the end of it.
At half time the scores were even with Whittlesey having the better of the play. In the second half Deeping started well as they looked to get back into the game, they should have gone ahead when a free kick was played beyond the Whittlesey defence but the Deeping striker prodded wide from close range. Both teams were competing well in a final that was very finely poised as it entered the last 15 minutes. Ryan Smith and Micky Burch were introduced to the fold as Whittlesey went to steal it an an attempt to avoid an unwanted extra time period.
With the fourth official indicating an added time period of three minutes Whittlesey threw one last attack at the opposition and Stefan Green ebbed into the box and beat his man before laying the ball off to Ryan Smith who cheekily back heeled the ball goalwards and caught the full stretch Deeping keeper by surprise and despite his effort the ball creeped over the line to send the Whittlesey contingent into absolute raptures. The boys knew they were moments from the final whistle and Deeping pushed 11 players up top in an attempt to get back into the game and gained a corner that Whittlesey defended superbly under pressure. The referee blew for full time moments later and we had won the Cup!!
The 20 minutes that followed that final whistle are very blurry to me, to see so many smiles was brilliant and something that will stay with me forever. The lads and club deserve this for the effort they've put in over the course of the season so far. Was great to see skipper Paul Minett pick the cup up and the boys bouncing up and down behnind him!
The changing room was rocking and Friday night was brilliant back in Whittlesey with the whole town proud of the lads, despite my requests for the lads to only have a couple due to Saturday's game i couldnt really moan when i saw them drinking out of the cup at quarter to midnight.
Great night for the club, hopefully we can pick up another couple of trophies before the season's out with a Combination League 1 title and a Cambs Junior Cup to play for.
