WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 5
OUNDLE TOWN RESERVES 2
Whittlesey returned to winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Oundle Town on Saturday at the Manor.
Due to the heavy fixture load we ringed the changes to rest a few tired legs with Wednesday's North Cambs Cup Final in mind, with the four lads that started the game on the bench on Thursday all making the starting XI.
The lads started averagely and looked to stamp a mark on the game, it was the visitors who went close on a couple of occasions with some long range shots. Whittlesey too had their chances but were failing to convert them, as the game reached the 20 minute stage and Oundle player sliced a clearance into his own net to give the home side a deserved lead. Whittlesey had a couple of opportunities to extend the lead but were dealt a hammer blow as the first half reached to a close when a corner was headed home by an unmarked Oundle player to make it 1-1.
Whittlesey then had what looked to be a perfectly good goal ruled out for offside when Paul Hibbins smashed a volley home.
HT score 1-1
The second half saw the lads fail to kick on and they were not their usual selves on the ball, giving it away far too cheaply in certain areas of the park. Whittlesey found a way back into the driving seat when Paul Hibbins shrugged off his marker to cooley slot home and make it 2-1. Again despite going a goal to the good, Whittlesey let their opponents back into the game with some slack marking when an Oundle player ghosted into the box to head home and again equalise for the visitors.
The lads didn't panic and responsed well though, Luke Quince smashed in a volley with 15 minutes remaining to make it 3-2 and put us back into the driving seat, the lads were determined not to let this lead slip further and the excellent Matty Heron was rewarded with a goal when the Oundle keeper found himself in no mans land and Heron expertly passed home from 25 yards to make it 4-2. As the game reached a finale, Hibbins unselfishly teed up Danny Baxter to prod home to make it 5-2
Good three points yesterday and a good reaction from the disappointing defeat at Perkins and Deeping on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. Very pleasing to see the boys bounce back well which showed a lot about their character. We were far from at our best yesterday but the win was the most important thing, however we'll need to pick the tempo up for Wednesday in a big cup final game against Chatteris Town at Fenland Park.
The lads are in good spirits and hopefully we can get the win on Wednesday - Come On!
