HAMPTON ATHLETIC RESERVES 0
WHITTLESEY UNITED RESERVES 1
Whittlesey chalked up a very important three points on Saturday afternoon against a resolute Hampton side.
After a thrilling 3-3 draw at Ramsey the Wednesday before this game, we were looking to get back to winning ways and were praying of the fixture going ahead after some bad weather on the Friday. Fortunately the game went ahead.
The lads started brightly and could have been 2-0 inside the opening 5 minutes as Paul Hibbins nipped behind the Hampton back-line on two occasions unleashing fierce shots that failed to find the target. Hampton though against the run of play had a glorious opportunity to make it 1-0 but their right winger missed a sitter after the home side had breached the Whittlesey back line.
With 25 minutes on the clock Whittlesey deservedly opened the scoring when Micky Burch found space in the box and cleverly hooked in a shot goalwards that beat the Hampton keeper to make it 1-0. Whittlesey continued to press for a second goal with Hibbins hitting the bar with a header and Ryan Smith smashing a left footed volley against the post
At half time the score was 1-0 and the lads were told to keep their concentration levels and get the second goal.
The second half saw a laboured performance from the lads as they failed to kick into the ascendancy, to be fair the lads could have added a further three or four second half goals but a mixture of good goalkeeping, misfortune and spurned chances kept a second goal at bay.
The final whistle was blown and we were chuffed with the points. The conditions were pretty dire and if you'd offered us a 1-0 win we'd have taken it beforehand. Despite looking comfortable throughout we weren't on the sidelines as at 1-0 the opposition always have a chance of getting back into the game. That said the lads did well in difficult conditions.
We are away at Chatteris Town on Wednesday evening in a game where we'll be looking to capture another three points. I'm sure a few of their first team will be down to watch as we play them in a couple of weeks in the North Cambs Cup Final.
